Our Vineyard

Cool climate wines in the heart of the Coal River Valley

With the first vines planted in 1973, the Coal River Valley in southern Tasmania has become firmly established among discerning palates as one of Australia’s most prestigious cool climate wine regions. As one of the most significant vineyard sites in the valley, we’re proud to be part of this tradition.

Nocton is more than just a vineyard, it’s a story of place, people, and passion. Family owned and proudly Tasmanian, we began our journey nestled in the rich dolerite soils of the Coal River Valley in 1999, drawn here by the promise of cool-climate winemaking and the natural beauty of the land.

From the beginning, Nocton has been about more than grapes in the ground. We’ve built a close knit team, many of whom have been with us for over a decade. Their dedication, knowledge, and care is poured into every bottle we make. Our long serving staff are part of the fabric of Nocton; their hands have pruned the vines, picked the fruit, and welcomed guests with warmth and pride.

At the heart of our winemaking is Alain Rousseau, a highly respected name in Australian wine with deep roots in both French tradition and modern Tasmanian craft. Alain brings a thoughtful, intuitive approach to our wines, always letting the vineyard speak first. His philosophy is simple: work gently with the fruit, honour the season, and let each wine express its own story. Under his guidance, our Estate and Reserve wines continue to evolve with elegance, precision, and soul.

Our cellar door is a reflection of everything we love about Nocton, humble, welcoming, and surrounded by beauty. From the moment you arrive, you're invited to slow down, settle in, and explore our wines through a guided tasting led by the people who know them best. The view alone is worth the visit, vast, open, and utterly peaceful. Whether you’re sipping on our Reserve Pinot or trying something unexpected like our Merlot based Rosé, the experience is designed to feel personal, unhurried, and full of character.

What makes Nocton special isn’t just the wine, it’s the connection to the land, the laughter shared during harvest, the stories told across the tasting bench, and the sense of belonging we hope every visitor feels the moment they arrive.
